National science education standards and benchmarks have been developed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS - Project 2061 Benchmarks) and National Research Council (NRC - National Science Education Standards).

Science education standards for K-12 institutions in Washington State are broken down into Grade Level Expectations, benchmarks to be achieved within the Systems, Inquiry and Application Essential Academic Learning Requirements by specified grade levels. Students are assessed on their science understanding at grades 5, 8, and 10 with the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).

Many of the GK-12 partner districts have adopted, or are in the process of adopting, research-based science curriculum materials such as inquiry science kits from FOSS (Lawrence Hall of Science) and STC (National Science Resources Council).
